Not all bedding is created equal

An Interview with Zig Zag Zurich

As curators of fine product, we seek high quality items that have a meaningful story and Zig Zag Zurich fit the bill with their unique luxurious bedding. Right from their tag line “Where artists meet textiles” to their in depth stories of each product line they create, we knew we had a match.

North Nik is now proudly offering several of Zig Zag Zurich products including their Vintage Yard Dyed Egyptian Cotton Bedding (shown above.). The beautiful rich colours initially drew us to this line, and as we learned there is a lot more to love about this collection.

We sat down with Adam from Zig Zag (figuratively, as he is in Zurich) and asked him what makes this bedding collection so special.

“First, most bedding ( parachute etc ) is all standard cotton piece dyed  - meaning they weave thousands of metres of fabric and dye it in a bath - most of the time it’s lower quality cheap cotton that is finished to ‘feel good’.

This vintage cotton is very special. It is yarn dyed, meaning we dye the individual yarns before we weave the yarns into the fabric.  Yarn dyed means the colour is much more intensive and most importantly lasts longer - the colour doesn’t fade like the usually piece dying process does.

 Secondly, we use a very high quality real Egyptian cotton yarn that is then dyed locally in Italy.

Thirdly, we weave the cotton, into a solid cotton, on a jacquard loom - no one does this, it’s unheard of (Jacquard looms are used for weaving for instance patterns, stripes etc ). This bedding is woven on an old Italian Jacquard loom and that is all we use this loom for, making this cotton - hence the unique patina. If you hold the cotton to the light, it has a sheen to it which is a combination of the yarns and how we weave it.

 Lastly, it is then washed in hot water using a process we called Boutis - think of stonewashing - this then gives the cotton the unique hand feeling that we have created.

 So that’s the story behind it… no one else has it, no one else can make it ( many have tried to copy and can’t create this fabric ) - it’s one of a kind due to the loom weave and the overall process.”
