The Now Design Show serious girl power….

It is always fun to go to design shows and look for great finds for the showroom. The most recent show in New York was truly an exceptional experience. There were so many women entrepreneurs, who are not only creating beautiful products, but who are also helping various communities across the globe, very inspiring…

Here are 3 companies that caught my attention both for their beautiful product and their drive to create while doing good. We look forward to bringing their creations home to you.

Article 22- “Love is the Bomb”

Article 22 is making the world a better place by creating jewelry from the 80 million undetonated bombs that were dropped in Laos during the Vietnam War. They partner with local Laos artisans to create modern heirlooms that are both beautiful and meaningful.

“PeaceBomb, our first collection, is jewelry handcrafted by traditional Laotian artisans from Vietnam War shrapnel and debris.A virtuous circle, each piece helps MAG (Mine Advisory Group) clear unexploded ordnance, making land safe and providing new metal to artisans to craft more original favorite and new designs.” article22.com

SOKO- “Where style is driven by a greater social purpose”

Soko is a company that works with Kenyan artisan to create modern jewelry that supports local entrepreneurship. Through digital banking and accessibility to cell phones, they have created a simple, commercially viable way to connect local artisans with the international market and industry.

“We fundamentally believe in using business as a force for good. We strategically balance profit with purpose. SOKO is created using heritage techniques with locally-sourced and eco-friendly materials such as brass, reclaimed cow horn and bone, and off-cuts of wood.” Shopsoko.com

Anchal- “A global sisterhood is born”

Anchal’s social goal is to reduce the number of women in India reliant on commercial sex work. Founded by sisters Colleen and Maggie Clines, they work together with textile artisans in India. Their designs blend the traditional, handmade craft with contemporary design using eco-friendly low-impact dyes, vintage fabric and GOTS certified organic cotton.

“Anchal Project is a nonprofit social enterprise that addresses the exploitation of women around the world by using design thinking to create employment opportunities, products and markets that support empowerment.” anchalproject.org
